Cuisenaire Rods: A Guide to Using a Remarkable Mathematics Resource
The purposes of this booklet are to:
- Outline the role which Cuisenaire rods can play in supporting children's mathematics learning.
- Help teachers to develop their understandings about the potential of the rods, and how they can be used to develop the number ideas of primary school children.
About the Author
Dr Fred Biddulph is a former primary teacher and principal, a Senior Lecturer in mathematics education at the University of Waikato, a mathematics education researcher, an adviser to the National Education Monitoring Project (Mathematics), and a primary mathematics curriculum developer in New Zealand, the Solomon Islands and the Cook Islands. In addition, he provided professional development for staff at the Regional Centre for Science and Mathematics in Penang, Malaysia, and for teachers in a large New Zealand primary school during a two-year Mathematics Development Project. He was also principal adviser for the development of the Galaxy Mathematics Programme for junior primary school children, published internationally by Wendy Pye Limited.
